I love getting my nails done. It is so exciting to go to a salon, pick out a unique look, and leave with a fresh set of nails. Sadly, I can’t afford to drop $40-$60 every other week on a cute new nail trend.
That’s why I’ve started to try out Pinterest inspired nail looks at home. This do it yourself will make you a pro in no time.
The first and easiest nail look I’ve done at home has been cloud nails. I would highly suggest trying this out at home. It is extremely easy, and literally anyone can do it.
All you need are a few cheap supplies, some inspiration, and a little patience to create this adorable design all on your own.

Before we get started searching for supplies, let’s get inspired. If you’ve never seen cloud nails before, let me tell you they are adorable. I’ve seen them done with basic blue, light purple, pastel pink, or even over a simple clear coat.
No matter what type of look you’re trying to accomplish, this guide will help you make even your wildest nail dreams come true.
Pick A Base Coat
The first thing you need to do to accomplish your cloud nail look is to pick out the perfect base color. You really can’t go wrong with any color, though most people prefer pastels or light colored options.
I will always suggest OPI because I personally think it’s the highest quality nail polish (not sponsored), but any brand will do. Here are a few nail polish options I think would look especially pretty with cloud nails. Click on any of the polishes below to view the color, price, and more.
Paint Base Coat
Once you pick out a cute base coat, it’s time to paint your nails. This step is pretty simple. Paint your nails as you normally do to get the color you want behind the clouds. I personally only did two coats so it would dry quickly, but it’s up to you.
This step may seem like a no brainer, but it is so important. You have to let your base coat dry completely before you start adding any clouds. If your nails aren’t dry they’ll smudge, mess up, and your clouds definitely won’t look right.
Paint On The Clouds
Now for the fun part. Painting on the clouds is a lot easier than it may look. All you need are bobby pins, white nail polish, and nail polish remover for any minor mistakes.
To create the clouds all you have to do is dip your bobby pin into the white nail polish, and create a cluster of dots that will form into a cloud. Make sure you don’t put too much nail polish on the bobby pin or it may be hard to control where the white polish goes.
Go slow, and take your time to get the perfect cloud look. If you aren’t sure about creating clouds with your non dominant hand, ask a friend to help you out.
Don’t worry too much about getting nail polish on your hands or sides of your nails. You can always go back after with remover to fix it.
Long Lasting Clear Coat
My personal favorite thing about a new set of nails is how long they last. To get the same long lasting nails as you do in the salon, you have to remember to put on a clear coat.
Putting on a clear coat makes my nails last so much longer. OPI’s clear coat always makes my nail polish last longer and look as if I got them done at the salon.
