This year has been without a doubt one for the books. As history is being written, lives are changing, and the world around us is in a state most of us have never lived through. With that being said, it is important to take care of yourself and loved ones. Finding consistent happiness and authentic joy is something everyone has to work towards, myself included. I wanted to take some time to talk about ways I’ve tried to keep a positive mindset and keep an optimistic demeanor on a day to day basis.
One silly but successful way to stay joyous even in the darkest times, is by writing down a few encouraging reminders to refer to during your day. When you wake in the morning and begin your day, think about five to ten things that make you truly happy and write them down.
You can write these down in a journal, on the reminders app on your phone, or even make it your phone’s wallpaper for the day. These affirmations can make or break your mindset. I know it may seem a little weird at first, but these positive reminders really make a difference.

If you’ve ever struggled with finding joy in the darker places of your life, you’re not alone. It takes a strong person to look their problems in the eye and be joyful despite them. It’s important to remember that the ups and downs of your life are temporary. They won’t last forever, and you will beat them. We can’t stop these things from showing up in our lives, but we can control how we react to them.
I have heard a lot of people talk about how you shouldn’t focus on the future or the past, but instead focus on the present. While I stand by this argument, I still think there is a beautiful thing about both the past and the future.
We have to focus on the present in order to remind ourselves that every day is a blessing, and every day holds an opportunity for greatness. We must also focus on the past to rejoice for the obstacles we’ve overcome and the life we’ve had thus far. We need to focus on the future when our present seems unendurable because the future holds goals that have been met and dreams that will be fulfilled.

For me one of the best ways to put a smile on my face is to imagine little moments that hold immense happiness. These moments can be fictional or real memories. Making your mind focus on the goodness that it is capable of, is a powerful tool. When you’re in a bad mood, frustrated with a situation, or just feeling a little funk, imagine the things that would make those feelings disappear.
Imagine laughing until you can’t breath with your closest friends. Imagine holding the hand of a loved one as you watch the sun set. Imagine the windows down in the car as you look out at the ocean. Imagine your greatest dreams coming true. Once you’ve established whatever vision you have created in your mind, chase after it until you don’t have to imagine it anymore.
Drink your coffee in the morning, workout when you’re feeling motivated, or treat yourself to that manicure. Live your life to the fullest and don’t be afraid to take a few chances, but do not let anything steal away your joy.
If you’re going through one of those moments where joy feels unobtainable, try these little things to take control of your happiness. It may not be easy and you’re going to have bad days, but don’t forget to focus on the good.

Reading this was so refreshing! Especially because times are very difficult right now and I think we’re all suffering in one way or another. We could all use a little positivity.
